Building On Faith A Huge Success!

November 18, 2008

October 4th 2008 marked the completion of Hope for Charlotte’s participation in Habitat for Humanity Critical Home Repair, Building on Faith. This was Critical Home Repair’s first year taking on such a massive task throughout Charlotte. They tackled 18 houses, while serving 25 families in a 3 day period.

Critical Home Repair is a fairly new program within Habitat for Humanity, which started when the need for repairs on existing homes was greater then the need for new homes. Many people in Charlotte own their homes out-right as they have been passed down from generation to generation. But as these houses get older, things start to break and leak. Most of the home owners do not have the physical or financial means to fix these problems and they become very unsafe. Thus, Critical Home Repair was born.

Hope for Charlotte was assigned Miss Little’s house off of Graham Street. Slowly going blind Miss Little was unable to get her housed fixed. The roof leaked, the shower was without several tiles with the plumbing exposed, the toilet was unstable due to years of leakage and her porch roof was so rotten, that it was unsafe to walk under as it might have fallen at any given time.

With the help of over 15 different volunteers and companies ( Daltile and Paint Depot in Matthews, NC), Hope for Charlotte was able to fix each and every problem, plus paint the entire exterior with a fresh coat of paint, fix the squeaky front door, replace the side porch door and clean up her gardens around the house.

But more importantly, what made this project a huge success was the relationship all of the volunteers made with Miss Little. Her heart for the Lord, her perspective on life and her thankfulness in all things. She made such an impact on all of us. One that will never be forgotten and that will be carried throughout all of are lives.

Miss Little’s heart is one that we would all hope to have.

Building on Faith – House Chosen

September 10, 2008
Habitat for Humanity has given Hope for Charlotte a specific house to help repair during their annual Building on Faith project.

The owner of the house is Miss Little. She is a sweet woman in her mid-50’s and is on disablitlity as she is slowly going blind. Miss Little inherited the 1950’s house from her mother and it is in desperate need of repair.

Hope for Charlotte will be working on her house Thursday Oct 2nd – Saturday Oct 4th. There are spots still open to help make this a better living sitation for Miss Little!

Congradulations to Miss Little!

Habitat’s Annual Building On Faith

September 2, 2008

Building on Faith is Habitat’s annual week long celebration of its strong and continuing Christian heritage. This year’s Building on Faith will take place from September 27th – October 4th.

Hope for Charlotte has committed to organizing a group to build October 2nd-4th (Thurs.- Sat.). We are trying to commit 15-20 people to volunteer each of those three days. Our part specifically will be to partner with the Critical Home Repair Program (formerly called the Isaiah 58 project). The CHR program assists families whose homes have become a danger to live in and are unable to have them repaired. The new homes to be built will be in Wingate, Lincoln Heights and Reid Park, located off of West Boulevard, between downtown and the airport. Click here to see the location of the projects and the families chosen this year!

This will be the 25th anniversary celebration of Building on Faith. The goal is to serve 25 families by building 20 houses and completing 5 repair projects here in Charlotte. This project is Habitat’s signature Blitz Build Project, celebrating their special connection to Charlotte’s faith community.  Each fall since 1995, faith groups of different denominations partner with Habitat by spending 1 week constructing between 10 and 20 homes for local, low-income families.

Building on Faith is a world wide project where a vast array of churches and faith groups have provided labor and finances to put their faith into action by building simple, decent, affordable housing with families in need. Church members in more than 200 locations around the country have picked up hammers to build more than 300 new homes, created better communities and have deepen friendships.

Habitat’s founder and president, Millard Fuller said, “we began Habitat for Humanity 32 years ago because we believed that the life and teaching of Jesus demand our faith be seen, not just heard. Building on Faith gives our Habitat for Humanity family a chance to formally recognize the commitment that drives us every day.”
